International Women’s Day: Accelerating Opportunity in Automotive

8 March 2025, Nuenen, the Netherlands – International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate progress in gender equality while recognising that there is still work to be done. The automotive industry, long considered a male-dominated field, is evolving — and education plays a key role in opening doors for more women to enter and thrive in this dynamic sector.

For Catherine Treanor, former automotive technician and current Customer Success Manager at Electude, her introduction to automotive started with a simple yet inspiring moment in school: “A local garage brought in a luxury car, and we got to check the oil and explore its mechanics. That hands-on experience sparked my interest.” Now, as a STEM ambassador and passionate advocate for diversity, she emphasizes the power of role models: “Even if I inspire just a few people to pursue a career in automotive, they can go on to do the same for others. It is a snowball effect.”

The Road Ahead for Women in Automotive

Women’s participation in automotive has grown, yet they remain underrepresented in key areas like manufacturing and repair. In the U.S., women make up 47% of the national workforce but only 27% of automotive manufacturing and just 9.5% in repair roles. In Europe, the pattern is similar, with women holding only a quarter of automotive manufacturing jobs. Pay gaps also persist, with women earning significantly less than men in the sector.

But change is within reach. As Cat notes, “The industry is evolving, and diverse skills are needed to meet new technological challenges. Encouraging students—especially those excelling in science and math—to explore automotive careers is crucial. Exposure, mentorship, and better career guidance can make a real impact.”

Education: Driving Change and Inclusion

One of the most powerful tools for closing the gender gap is education. Studies show that higher education levels increase women’s workforce participation, highlighting the need for early exposure and support in male-dominated fields. Educators play a vital role in fostering interest and confidence in students, shaping the next generation of automotive professionals.

The demand for skilled automotive professionals is rising, particularly in the electric vehicle sector. With nearly half a million new technicians needed in the U.S. alone by 2028, companies have a unique opportunity to tap into a broader talent pool by fostering inclusive workplaces and investing in education.

“Women are still a minority in the motor industry, but we are also a necessity. We are facing some exciting and admittedly challenging changes in technology. We need a diverse team to solve these new problems and change this industry for the better. […]

In many ways, educators are the first role models students are exposed to. They are, of course, responsible in generating passion and interest in the topic as well as being a source of support and industry experience. They are the ones showing students around on open days, creating a safe environment and bolstering students’ confidence and skills.”

At Electude, we celebrate the women who are shaping the future of education and driving progress in automotive, technology, and beyond. By standing up for education, mentorship, and opportunity, we can accelerate a future where diversity drives innovation and success.
