About CTECS

The Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) is a statewide system of 17 diploma-granting technical high schools and one technical education centre, serving approximately 11,000 high school students. CTECS offers a rigorous blend of academic and career technical education, preparing students for both college and high-demand careers.

In the Automotive Technology program, students receive hands-on training in modern, industry-aligned facilities. Through Career Technical Education pathways, Work-Based Learning, and partnerships with regional employers, students gain real-world experience and certifications that prepare them for immediate employment or further education in the motor vehicle industry.

Challenges

How automotive education went online in 2020

Automotive education tends to attract hands-on learners and requires more hands-on practice than most subjects. In 2020, automotive programs shut down by the pandemic led to schools searching for online solutions to try and replace as much of the classroom and shop experience as possible. 

Solutions

Interactive learning that delivers: CTECS and Electude

CTECS utilised Electude’s six-month free trial offer and made it available to all eighteen programs in their network. Based on positive feedback to the highly interactive Electude e-learning, CTECS decided to stick with Electude even after their schools reopened. Seeking to improve outcomes, CTECS has steadily ramped up usage across most campuses since 2020, including migrating from Electude Essentials to the more robust Electude Classroom product.

Results

Regular use of Electude increases ASE pass rates by around 65%

The schools in CTECS that embraced the adoption and utilised the program regularly saw significant boosts to ASE test scores. By comparing Electude usage rate to ASE tests scores, we were able to observe the following trends:

1. Between 2021 – 2024, schools that did not use Electude had an overall ASE pass rate of 41%, while schools that averaged 40+ hours per year of Electude had a pass rate of 73%. 

2. When controlling for variables such as testing year, school, and test type, the expected ASE pass rate for schools using Electude 40+ hours per year was 66%, compared to an expected value of 40% in schools with no usage. 

Proof in the pass rates: Electude makes a difference

With over 5,000 testing events, and data collected over the last 6 years,the results are both significant and compelling: Students attending schools that made heavy or moderate use of Electude had a significantly higher chance of passing ASE exams than those attending schools that chose not to use Electude.

Conclusion

With over 5,000 ASE tests tracked across five years, the data is clear: CTECS students who used Electude for at least 40 hours per year were over 60% more likely to pass their ASE exams than those who did not use Electude. This success reflects not only the strength of Electude’s content—built to deepen understanding and prepare students for certification—but also the dedication of CTECS educators and leaders in delivering high-quality, career-focused instruction.

CTECS has built a strong foundation through thoughtful curriculum planning and a commitment to student achievement. Now, in collaboration with Electude’s customer success team, CTECS is working to increase usage across all schools. Together, the goal is to empower more learners to succeed on ASE exams and thrive in the automotive workforce.
