4. What the Test Generator does

The Test Generator is an LMS function that automatically builds a test from a course. It works with both predefined Electude courses and custom courses assembled by a teacher. Generation is course-based: it does not generate a separate test from one individual module.

  • The result is created as a DIY module.
  • The generated test can be used immediately or edited before publication.
  • Teachers can rename it, remove questions, add their own questions, add or remove images, change the order and adjust question weighting.
  • A DIY-enabled counter/licence is required to generate and use the test.

4.1. Where the questions come from

Generated questions do not come directly from the short quizzes in learning modules. They come from a separate Electude question bank hosted in the LCMS. Some questions may look familiar because both quiz and test questions address the same learning objectives.

  • The question bank is continuously expanded as questions are added and translated.
  • Only questions available for the customer, course and selected language can be used.
  • The standard Test Generator bank uses static image formats such as SVG, PNG and JPEG. Not all question contain an image.
  • Questions do not not use interactive drag-and-drop or hotspot content, but this can be added manually. Please not that this can influence the QTI export (see “QTI Limitations”).

4.2. Availability and question count

The Generate test for this course button is shown only when enough eligible questions are available to offer the minimum test size. If the button is absent, this is normally a content-availability issue rather than an intermittent fault.

  • The minimum generated test size is 10 questions.
  • The generator can include up to two questions per learning objective, with an overall cap of 100 questions.
  • The drop-down therefore varies by course and language; not every course can generate every test size.

4.3. How questions are selected

The generator spreads questions across as many different learning objectives from the modules as possible before adding further questions from the same objective. This supports broad coverage, but a short test may still contain fewer questions than there are learning objectives.

Practical recommendation: When specific learning objectives from modules must be assessed, generate a larger test, review the selected questions and remove those you do not need. Do not assume that every objective is covered in a test that contains fewer questions than learning objectives.

Generation selects and orders questions automatically. Once a test has been generated, its selected questions and their order remain fixed until the teacher edits them. If a second version is needed, generate a new test or duplicate and edit the first version, then verify the final content.

4.4. Recommended workflow

  1. Open the course — Select the complete predefined or custom course that the test should assess.
  2. Check availability — Look for Generate test for this course. If it is absent, too few eligible questions are available in that language.
  3. Enter a name – Give the resulting DIY module a recognisable name.
  4. Choose the test size — Select one of the question counts offered in the drop-down list.
  5. Select a pass percentage – Select a minimum percentage of questions that has to be answered correctly to pass the test.
  6. Select a duration – If required, select a maximum time duration for the test. If not required, leave this blank.
  7. Generate — Create the test.
  8. Review the content — Check content coverage, wording, order and suitability for the intended assessment.
  9. Adjust where needed — Remove or add questions and modify the weighting. All generated questions initially have equal weighting (value 3).
  10. Publish or export — Use the test in the Electude LMS or export it as QTI when an external assessment environment is required.

4.5. Editing the generated test

Because the output is a DIY module, the normal DIY tools apply. A teacher who does not need changes can use the test as generated; familiarity with DIY is mainly needed for editing and locating the saved self-made module.

  • All generated questions have equal weighting and a default value of 3.
  • Weighting can be changed per question after generation.
  • Teacher-created questions can be added, but these additions require extra attention when exporting to QTI.
  • After saving, the test is available with the self-made/DIY modules.

4.6. QTI export

A generated test can be exported as a QTI package for use in another LMS or assessment system. This can be useful when a school uses a separate assessment platform or needs a controlled or offline test environment. The export follows the QTI 2.2 standard.

Compatibility check  Before relying on an external platform, confirm that it supports QTI 2.2 and run a complete import test. Implementations differ, even when both systems describe their support as QTI-compatible.

4.7. QTI limitations

The questions generated from Electude’s dedicated Test Generator bank are designed to export correctly. The main risks arise when a teacher adds other DIY question types or media before export.

  • The number of questions in the exported package can therefore be lower than the number in the edited DIY test.
  • Images included in the QTI package remain subject to Electude’s terms of use.

4.8. Troubleshooting and support

4.9. Key takeaways

  • Generate from a course, not from an individual module.
  • The questions come from a dedicated, learning-objective-based question bank.
  • No button usually means that too few questions are available in that language.
  • The generated result is an editable DIY module with equal default question weighting.
  • Review the final selection when exact learning-objective coverage matters.
  • Use QTI 2.2 export for external or secure assessment environments, and test compatibility before use.
  • Pay particular attention to teacher-added media and interactive question types before QTI export.
